About this gym

Team Alpha Male is a mixed martial arts gym in Sacramento, California. Almost all of its fighters compete in the lighter half of the sport — featherweight, bantamweight and flyweight. The heaviest divisions are not represented on this roster at all.

Why the light divisions are different

Weight classes are not just numbers on a contract. They reward different things, and the gap is wider than most people outside the sport assume.

Lighter fighters win by pace and volume. They throw more, they keep moving in the last round, and they win exchanges by stacking small advantages. The heaviest divisions work the other way: one clean shot can end the night, so conserving the ability to land it matters more than piling up work.

A gym where nearly everyone is preparing for the first kind of fight develops a shared answer to it. Rounds get built around output a fighter can hold rather than output that peaks early. Grappling is taught for scrambles that keep moving rather than for positions that get held. That shared answer is the closest thing a gym has to a style, and it is why specialisation shows up in how fighters look, not only in what they weigh.

Deep in one band, empty in another

The trade here is stark. A bantamweight at this gym has training partners in his own division and more within a class of it — a depth of same-size work no broad roster can match at any single weight.

The reverse is just as true. There is no heavyweight work available in this room. A fighter who moved up would have to leave to prepare properly, and that is a real constraint rather than a detail.

What you will find below

The roster is mostly American, with a small international element from a handful of countries. Most of the fighters listed here compete at the top level of the sport. Women's divisions are represented.

The pages below list every fighter in this catalogue whose most recent bout came out of this gym, with their weight class, nationality, record and how each of their last five fights ended.
