The hands have not healed
The update is blunter than most fighters allow themselves. “I still can’t punch anything. Both of my hands are still hurt from the fight,” Gaethje told Sports Illustrated. Two and a half months after the win, the champion of the division cannot do the one thing his career is built on.
His reasoning for staying out is arithmetic rather than sentiment: “I’m just going to enjoy being the champion for the rest of the year,” he said, because “I fought two times already in the first six months.” January against Paddy Pimblett, June against Ilia Topuria on the White House card. Two title-level fights in half a year is a schedule almost nobody keeps.
Retirement is on the table, and he put it there
He is 37, and he did not dodge the question. His method for deciding sounds like a man who has already started: “Put everything on paper, pros and cons, talk to my family and everybody that loves me to be honest with me and then I’ll make a decision.”
That is not a retirement announcement. It is a champion saying out loud that the next fight is not a given, which for a division waiting on him is functionally the same problem.
What freezes behind him
A title shot with no date
This is where the announcement stops being about one man. Arman Tsarukyan meets Mauricio Ruffy at UFC 331 on September 19, and both fighters have said the UFC promised the winner a title shot next. Ruffy put it flatly to Main Event TV, and Ariel Helwani reported the same promise on Tsarukyan’s side.
The promise still stands. What it no longer has is a calendar. Whoever wins on September 19 now waits on a champion who cannot punch and may not come back at all.
And a free agent aiming at the same belt
The same freeze hits from outside. Usman Nurmagomedov fought out his PFL contract in July, turned down more than $2 million to re-sign, and spent August dismantling the UFC’s lightweights by name. His exclusivity window with the PFL runs into late October, at which point the UFC can finally talk to him.
He would arrive in a division whose belt is parked. That does not make the move less likely, but it changes what he is arriving for.

What the UFC can actually do about it
The options are all imperfect
A promotion with a champion out for a year has three moves, and Gaethje’s own words close off part of the first. An immediate rematch with Topuria is the obvious commercial answer, and he does not sound convinced: “I don’t think that’s my next fight, in my gut.” He also conceded the choice is not his, “ultimately the UFC makes the decision on who I’m going to fight next.”
The second is an interim title, which would give the Tsarukyan–Ruffy winner something to fight for. Nobody at the UFC has said a word about it, and it would be dishonest to present it as a plan rather than the obvious guess.
The third is to wait. That is free for the promotion and expensive for everyone else in the top five, who lose a year of their prime to a queue.
What to watch
Two signals, in order. Whether the UFC says anything about an interim belt in the weeks after UFC 331, which would tell you it has stopped waiting. And whether Gaethje’s hands come up again in interviews, because a fighter who keeps describing an injury three months on is usually further from returning than the calendar suggests.
