About this gym
American Kickboxing Academy is a mixed martial arts gym in San Jose, California, in the southern part of the San Francisco Bay Area. It is one of the older rooms in American MMA, from the period when gyms were still built around a single discipline and added the rest as the sport demanded it.
A wrestling room in a kickboxing building
The name says kickboxing; the reputation says wrestling. Both are accurate, and the sequence explains the style the room produces. A striking gym that absorbed high-level wrestling ends up with fighters who can choose where a fight happens — which is a different thing from fighters who are only comfortable in one place.
What that looks like in a bout is a heavy top game backed by enough striking to make the takedown credible. The threat is what creates the opening, and the opening is what makes the threat work. Fighters formed this way are hard to prepare for, because the answer to one half of the problem makes the other half worse.
A small roster in the heavier bands
This page occupies fewer weight classes than most, and it reaches higher up the scale than a room of this size usually does — the heavyweight band is represented, which is among the thinnest classes in the sport and the hardest for any gym to staff.
The reason that matters is partners. A heavyweight without someone their own size in the room is preparing alone, and there is no substitute: technique scales down, mass does not. A room that carries more than one fighter in the upper bands is providing something most cannot.
Where the roster comes from
Half of this list is American and half is not, drawn from Mexico and South America. The Bay Area has the immigration patterns to explain that, and the practical effect in a training room is the useful kind — boxing-first fighters working daily against wrestling-first ones.
The promotions column mixes the largest organisation with circuits based outside the United States, which is the normal shape when a roster is half international.
The pages below list every fighter in this catalogue whose most recent bout came out of this gym, with their weight class, nationality, record and how each of their last five fights ended.
