About this gym
Pura Vida BJJ is a Brazilian jiu-jitsu and mixed martial arts gym in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The name puts the grappling first, and that ordering is accurate: this is a jiu-jitsu academy that developed a fight team, rather than a fight gym that added a grappling class.
What a grappling academy produces
Fighters formed in a jiu-jitsu room treat the floor as the destination rather than the hazard. They are comfortable in positions that strikers experience as emergencies, they attack from underneath, and they tend to accept exchanges that end in a scramble because the scramble is where they are strongest.
The work that has to be added is the striking, and the honest version of that sentence is that it takes years. A submission game transfers into mixed martial arts almost intact; a striking game has to be built from nothing under the threat of a takedown that changes every distance.
A Midwestern roster in the middle bands
The occupied divisions concentrate around the middle of the scale, with the middleweight band carrying most of the roster and the lighter classes represented above nothing. For a room this size that concentration is the useful kind — several fighters within reach of each other's weight, sparring meaningfully rather than making do.
This page is entirely American, and the birthplaces are regional. That is the profile of a room that grew from its own community rather than recruiting, and it is the normal shape for a gym in a city without a fight industry attached to it.
Wisconsin as a base
The upper Midwest supplies wrestling the way it supplies little else in combat sport, and a jiu-jitsu academy operating there is working alongside that rather than against it. A room that can put a wrestler and a submission grappler on the same mat every evening is providing the two halves of the sport in one place, which is more than most gyms of this size manage.
The promotions column is concentrated at the top, with an American circuit underneath. There is a women's entry as well, in the heavier of the women's classes.
