About this gym
City Kickboxing is a mixed martial arts gym in Auckland, New Zealand. The name is not decoration: the room came out of kickboxing and muay thai, and the striking is the first thing a fighter from here is known for rather than something added later to a grappling base.
What distance does to a gym
New Zealand is a long way from every major fight market. That geography shapes the room more than any coaching philosophy could. A gym in California can import training partners for a camp; a gym in Auckland has to grow them, because flying someone in for six weeks is a different proposition from driving them in for an afternoon.
The consequence is visible in the list below: this roster is largely domestic, and the fighters on it came up together rather than arriving already formed. Rooms built that way tend to share a style, because everyone learned the same things from the same people at the same time. It is a strength while the style is ahead of the sport, and a constraint when opponents catch up.
Striking first, and what that costs
A striking-led room produces fighters who are comfortable at range, precise with their footwork, and awkward to close down. The recognisable marks are a bladed stance, long entries and a readiness to keep a fight standing for as long as the rules allow.
The cost is on the other side of the exchange. Fighters formed in a striking school meet wrestlers who have no interest in trading, and the answer has to be developed rather than inherited. What separates the careers that last is how early that work started.
