About this gym

Alliance MMA is a mixed martial arts gym in San Diego, California. The name belongs to one of the larger jiu-jitsu lineages in the sport, and the room reflects that origin: the grappling came first and the rest was assembled around it.

San Diego as a base

San Diego sits at the southern end of the Southern California fight corridor, close enough to the Mexican border that the two scenes overlap and far enough from Los Angeles to have its own character. It is a city with an unusual density of grappling academies, which changes what a mixed martial arts room there has to provide.

When high-level jiu-jitsu is available on every other block, a gym does not need to be the only place a fighter trains. It needs to be the place where the pieces are put together — where striking, wrestling and grappling are made to work as one thing rather than three.

A roster spread across the scale

The occupied divisions here run from the lighter bands through the middle of the scale, with roughly one fighter in each. That is the widest possible spread for a roster this size, and it is the least comfortable one: almost nobody has a partner their own weight in the room.

Gyms in that position lean on the surrounding scene, and in San Diego there is a surrounding scene to lean on. A roster that would be isolating in a smaller city works here because the missing partners are a short drive away.

Domestic, with a women's entry

This page is largely American, with an element from further afield. There is a women's entry among the lighter classes — worth noting for a roster of this size, since carrying a woman through a professional camp requires partners the room may not contain.

The promotions column spreads across several organisations rather than concentrating in one, including a women's promotion. That shape says the careers here were built on more than one circuit, which is normal for a Californian roster and makes the records below harder to compare at a glance.

The pages below list every fighter in this catalogue whose most recent bout came out of this gym, with their weight class, nationality, record and how each of their last five fights ended.
