Khusein Askhabov: what happened on October 17
A lightweight co-main event
The bout was the co-main event of Airtox Dominance FC 8.0 at K.B. Hallen in Copenhagen, according to MMA Fighting and the Danish site Presse-fotos.
The timeout
The referee stopped the action for a suspected eye poke. During the break, Askhabov tried to attack Ekson. The referee had to hold him back, and members of his corner tried to get into the cage before security stepped in, according to the DMMAF statement.
The original call
Askhabov was initially declared the winner by TKO in round 1, after a doctor’s stoppage. Ekson’s team protested the result.
The DMMAF decision
Disqualification
On October 26, the DMMAF Board overturned the result and named Reinaldo Ekson the winner by disqualification. The federation said the conduct during the timeout warranted a DQ regardless of the circumstances of the initial stoppage.
12 months for the fighter and his corner
Askhabov and his corner team receive a 12-month disciplinary suspension under the federation’s Code of Conduct. It covers every DMMAF-sanctioned event and activity, in any capacity. MiddleEasy notes it is not described as a worldwide ban.
A federation that admits its mistake
The DMMAF said the original decision was wrong, took responsibility for correcting it and promised to review its procedures and the support given to its officials.
