The BMF title was created for Jorge Masvidal vs Nate Diaz, the UFC 244 main event in New York on November 2, 2019. Masvidal won by doctor stoppage after round 3.

The title returned at UFC 291 on July 29, 2023 in Salt Lake City, at lightweight. Justin Gaethje knocked out Dustin Poirier with a head kick in round 2.
Max Holloway, 2024
At UFC 300 on April 13, 2024, Max Holloway knocked out Gaethje in the final second of round 5. He became the 1st to defend the belt, against Poirier at UFC 318 in July 2025.
Charles Oliveira, 2026
On March 7, 2026, at UFC 326, Charles Oliveira dominated Holloway 50-45 on all 3 cards. He is the 1st man to have held the BMF belt and the undisputed lightweight title.

King Green and the BMF title at UFC 332
The ultimate honor
King Green, 40 and on 4 straight wins, said before UFC 332 that the BMF belt would be the ultimate honor of his career, while doubting he would ever be offered it.

At the press conference, asked about a shot for Green if he beats Esteban Ribovics, Dana White said he absolutely agrees. Oliveira has not yet defended the belt.
