A defence, not a vacant belt
The wording matters, because it had been disputed for two days. Dana White said on Friday that Gane would not be promoted and would have to fight for the title. The promotion’s own announcement says the opposite: undisputed champion, defending. The belt is not empty, and the man who beat Alex Pereira for the interim version in June is the champion on the poster.

Only two bouts are formally announced at the top. Gane against Hokit at heavyweight, and Kayla Harrison against Amanda Nunes (23-5) for the women’s bantamweight title in the co-main event, Harrison’s first defence against a former two-division champion. The rest of the card is still being filled.

Hokit earned his deal on Dana White’s Contender Series in August 2025. He has won four straight since November 2025, collected four bonuses along the way, including performance of the night and fight of the night against Curtis Blaydes at UFC 327, and arrives off a TKO of Derrick Lewis. At 28 and 10-0, he gets a championship main event roughly fifteen months after signing.
He asked for it out loud
Hokit did not wait to be picked. When Aspinall gave up the belt he posted that the fans deserved the fight, and added that if Alex Pereira won a single bout at heavyweight he would give him one too, early in 2027, promising to be the most active champion in the company. The promotion gave him the first half of that.
What the matchup actually asks
An unbeaten record built in fifteen months says less about a heavyweight than who it was built against, and the Blaydes and Lewis names are the two that count. Against Gane he meets the cleanest technical striker the division has, and a man whose own record is questioned precisely on the nights that mattered most.

Aspinall was explicit that vacating was not retirement and that he intends to return once he is cleared. A champion crowned in his absence inherits that unfinished conversation, and a first defence at Madison Square Garden is the cleanest possible way to answer it.
